Creative folk from Eric Ravilious to Derek Jarman, have flocked to Dungeness inspired by the fascinating landscape and obscure structures that populate the beach. The area has appeared in many films, music videos, television dramas and now on a wallpaper by Mini Moderns who spent the last year renovating a converted railway carriage on Dungeness Beach. Fat Ceramics is a new collection by eminent Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek in collaboration with Pad Home. The clean minimalist range with its crisp clean lines and desirable colour palette is far removed from his signature ‘Scrapwood’ furniture. Piet opted for thick ceramics over the typical thin resulting in this sought after set. Pad home will launch the wares at Home, 12-14 January 2014 at Earl’s Court, London.

Nestled in the heart of Shoreditch is the new restaurant the Merchants Tavern designed by Very Good & Proper. Ed Carpenter and the team suggested a private club versus modern country. Black leather semi circular seating nods to the 80’s and reiterates the curves of their MT Club Chair. Exposed bricks, log burners and wood paneled areas add atmosphere.

If you have not read Patternity blog prepare yourself for a dose of serious inspiration. The design studio created by photographer/art director Anna Murray with surface/product designer Grace Winteringham record and create conceptual patterns for the application of print and related disciplines. They have collaborated with Richard Brendon the British bone china specialist to produce the ‘Patternity Meets Richard Brendon’ collection. This brings together Richards expertise in ceramics and Patternity’s heritage with pattern. The show stopping cup and saucer offers a new take on the op art style as the mirrored cup distorts striped pattern.

Available in teacups & plates available from Richard Brendon & Heals starting at £40.

Each year as we reach the depths of winter I slip into hibernation mode and my quest for comfort heightens. My attention has turned to cushions. For folk seeking for something individual, you may be happy to hear that Weaver Ptolemy Mann and The New Craftsman collaborated on a limited edition of 8 art cushions titled Chromascope. The laboriously hand dyed woven swatches are assembled and stitched together with precision by expert needle-smith Nina Plumer to emulate kaleidoscopic patterns. This colourway is my favourite. Simply add a touch of any of the colours to balance the piece in your room. Available at thenewcraftsmen for £345.

The exhibition In the Making’ at the Design Museum highlights the aesthetic appeal of the unfinished object. Over twenty objects curated by Barber Osgerby capture designs in mid production.
The duo said, ‘We have always been fascinated by the making process as it is an integral part of our work. We have curated an exhibition that will provide a platform to capture and reveal a frozen moment in the manufacturing process and unveils an everyday object in its unfinished state. Continue Reading…
