Pedder and Scampton’s Beach Huts

Pedder and Scampton’s graphic beach huts at Southend-on-Sea, recently shortlisted for a RIBA regional award, will be open for their first full summer season this year.

The architects beat more than 40 other architectural practices and completed the first wave of eight huts at the end of last summer. Upon release the huts were quickly snapped up, another seven are to be built, so if you missed out last time you could still be in with a chance.

A reflective glass house appeared on the architectural scene in 2014. ‘Das House’ by Louise Campbell

Louise Campbell presented her imposing 240 metre-squared ‘Das House’ at IMM Cologne 2014. It is an accolade to be chosen for the job. Each year a designer is commissioned to build their future home detailing visually how it is possible to create a world of one’s own that becomes an expression of their own personality. The project evolved through a series of themes and secret titles. The brief set required a residence and workshop to accommodate the owners Unimog. German architecture studios Fabian Evers Architecture and Wezel Architektur coined the structure ‘House Unimog’ in homage to the four wheel drive trucks produced by Mercedes-Benz. This unique corrugated home is set on two levels; the ground floor is semi transparent, the first floor black and opaque. FAT announced the end of its practice today. The phenomenally successful collaboration will close next summer after 23 years of service in design upon the completion of A House For Essex, designed for Living Architecture (in collaboration with artist Grayson Perry), and the curation of A Clockwork Jerusalem at the British Pavilion as part of the 2014 Venice Biennale (in collaboration with Crimson Architectural Historians and Owen Hatherley).
