Tom Dixon- The Church at CDW2016

The stop off on everyone’s trail at CDW2016 was Tom Dixon’s installation at St James’s Church. The sun was out on Thursday 26th and the way the light fell into the church through the stained glass has been captured perfectly, as usual by Sophie Mutevelian, one of our favourite photographers.

Rather than rent a space in town, Dixon decided to collaborate with Andrew Baughen, the enlightened Vicar of St James’ Church. Andrew Baughen sees the potential of making this unique building available to the daytime residents of Clerkenwell, the creative workforce and a place for the residential community to use as a resource.

The partnership involved Dixon’s team installing a large Curve chandelier in the main space, a co-working environment and a kitchen all to be donated as permanent fixtures once the Design Week juggernaut rolls out of town. Which means if you missed this incredible installation, you can return whenever you want to enjoy it. That is surely what good design is all about- making it available to all.

The Dixon team have said that: “As the Church evolves and adapts to the new conditions of the 21st century, the opportunity of opening up to new audiences and unexpected collaborations becomes a necessity. For the design audience and the more permanent residents of Clerkenwell, we hope that a contemplative and spiritual space becomes more comfortable and accessible thanks to our small intervention.”
