Augmented Reality Application shows architecture from the past, present and future

ARA, NAi Augmented Reality application

The Layar augmented reality browser is now being put to work to reveal insights about Dutch architecture.

To recap on AR: when a camera-equipped smartphone is pointed at a scene, AR apps will superimpose information and links relevant to the location. SARA, which was created by the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in partnership with IN10 Communicatie and Layar, is billed as the world’s first mobile architecture application featuring augmented reality with 3D models. Users of the technology simply hold up their smartphone to see photos, video, 3D models, scale models and other details about buildings currently in situ as well as those from the past and any planned for the future.

Design Virus Alert

According to Dutch Designer Pieke Bergman her distorted light bulbs are nothing more than standard bulbs infected with the ‘design virus’. The quirky young designer explains that her bulbs have “gone way out of line…taking on all kinds of forms and sizes you wouldn’t expect from such well behaving and reliable little products.”

My3 favourite Designs by Dave Keune

No 1 – Valentine type writer -> I think it is a clear example of a design in which shape has its origin in functionality. By making the correct bold choices it results in a great design that is still up to date, except for the fact that it is a typewriter.

Brainwave sofa by Unfold & Lucas Maassen

Image from the making of the brainwave sofa // Courtesy of Unfold & Lucas Maasse
The design of the Brainwave Sofa is driven by a brain scan. Brain wave activities are being recorded by an electroencephalograph by placing electrodes on the bare skin on the head. Via BioExplorer, a computer program that records biophysical data, processes and visualises it, a three dimensional waved landscape is generated. The x-axis shows the brain wave activities in hertz. The Y-axis shows the amount of activity in percentage. The Z-axis is the time expressed in milliseconds.

DAVE KEUNE answers Despoke’s Questions

What made you want to become a designer in the first place?
I think it just grew on me, as a boy I was always creating boats and planes with lego and I was always drawing. You just had to put me in a corner with pen and paper and I could amuse myself for ours.
Where did you study design?
The Design Academy in Eindhoven
What was the first thing you designed?
The first redesigns I did on my bikes but my first real design was my bed in shape of an abstract coffin (sorry, I was young and foolish).
my first serious design ( maybe better to be quoted ) was a small wall fixture consisting out of a small base and 5 flame-like shades.
How do you define good design?
Good design serves a purpose for humanity.
Good design is one in concept to final design and material.
What would you be if not a designer?
I have been a bike messenger, which I would like to do again if I wasn’t a designer.
My other option is to be an architect, currently I am already focusing on interior design. I think it gives me more opportunities to create an experience.
Which design of yours are you most proud of and why?
the winge cupboard : it shows a new perspective on using a cupboard while maintaining its function and, more important its stately identity.
The structure is fully self-supportive, the shelves, doors, top, bottom and back are all dependent on each other.
Anything in your career you wish you’d done differently?
no, I think everything is a result of what you have done, I am happy were I am right now so I am happy with what I have done so far.
Which designers do you most admire?
Charles and Ray Eames, the Bouroullec bros. and Constantin Gcric
Which product do you wish you’d designed/do you think is an example of good design?
the Valentine Typewriter from Olivetti, it shows function fully integrated in the design resulting in a timeless design.
Tell me about your design style at home?
At home I have some design classics ( i.e. LCW ) combined with vintage, ikea and some of my own designs.
