Despoke Editor of the Month – Febuary – Chris Jackson

Chris Jackson is an Industrial Designer, Researcher and Lecturer. He works and collaborates under the umbrella of Northwards Design Studio, which he established in 2002. In 2003 he was a founding member of design collective SHIFT, and in 2006 founded the TEN collective and exhibition, which has gone on to win in a number of awards in the last five years including the Blueprint / 100% Design award for ‘Best Contribution to Show’. His clients include Habitat, Marset, Dark and Innermost and his work has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous press publications. Most recently, Fat Lip for ethical manufacturer Bodj, was announced as one of ten finalists in the Utilita Manifesta ‘Fight Poverty’ design competition.

What made you want to become a designer in the first place?
I always enjoyed art at school, and wanted to be a graphic designer at 16, then found design in three dimensions at Art College.

Where did you study design?
BA (hons) in furniture & product design at Nottingham Trent University, MA in Furniture Design & Technology at BCUC, but like Chris Finch, learned most in the University of Life.

TEN XYZ perspectives on the complex issues of sustainability within design using digital manufacturing technologies


At this years 100% Design the TEN design collective presented TEN XYZ — an exploration of their varied perspectives on the complex issues of sustainability within design using digital manufacturing technologies.

TEN XYZ references the axis utilised within software and digital manufacturing technologies to produce three-dimensional objects. For this years project TEN have explored a plethora of digital technologies including; Laser Cutters, Water Jet Profilers, 3D scanning, 2-Axis plotter-cutters, rapid prototyping as well as 3 and 5-Axis CNC routing.

Branch Out by Studiomama for TENXYZ

London designer Nina Tolstrup of Studio Mama presented a collection of furniture made from digitally-altered branches with TEN XYZ at 100% Design in London last month.

Called Branch Out, the project involved scanning the branches with a 3D scanner before maniuplating them with software and rapid-prototyping the resulting forms.
