Tint Lamp by Magnus Pettersen

Posted on August 30th, 2011 by Mark

London-based designer Magnus Pettersen makes his debut at 100%Design with 100% Norway with the Tint lamp. “For the lamp I am mixing two materials which are mainly associated with architecture; glass and concrete,” explains Magnus. “Using black concrete and a warm coloured glass, transform the hard materials into an object which suits an interior environment.”

Magnus is from Sarpsborg outside Oslo. He studied Product & Furniture Design at Kingston University and then went on to do an MA in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins. He won a D&AD Student Award in 2008 and since graduating three years ago, he has been working as a freelance product designer for various design studios in London. Magnus started designing his own products in 2010.

Mind the Gap by Ida Noemi

Oslo-based designer Ida Noemi will head to 100% Design and show her pieces Mind the Gap which were inspired by the fact that “emotionally neutral objects do not exist and that today we search for objects that are not only functional, but also inspiring. We fill our homes with furniture and things we love, and objects that say something about who we are.”

Mind the Gap is Ida’s comment on the dual impact of an entrance hall: “it is the first room you enter in a home, and the last room you leave. It bridges the gap between the private world and the outside world. Thinking of the entrance this way, it can be defined as a transition portal between the two worlds. You never spend time there, yet you always pass by – a transitional moment of extreme stress or ultimate relief.”

The Story lamp, the result of a collaboration between young female designers Vibeke Skar and Ida Noemi Vidal, mixes old craftsmanship methods with new technology.

“Once upon a time there was a lamp called Story. Born in Norway between high mountains and deep fjords, it dreamed of lighting up small wooden houses in the dark forests. With a translucent pattern depicting traditional knitting, it warmed the hearts of the travellers it met on its journey…”

“As a designer I always try to be innovative, but I might be a bit old fashioned in my thoughts of design,” says Martin Solem who’s currently studying in Copenhagen, Denmark. “For me, a product has to be realistic and useful to be called good design. What I try to do is to combine these basic thoughts with new innovative ideas.”

Whilst studying furniture making, Martin got a serious back injury which forced him to stop his studies. Determined to pursue a career in designed, he was accepted at the Bergen National Academy of Arts before continuing his design Bachelor at The Danish Design School in Copenhagen.

World launches from elfin designers
Successful porcelain designers Wik&Walsøe, famed for their designs incorporating elf motifs, now return to London to launch their brand new tableware at 100% Design.

Lys tableware is inspired by Scandinavian nature, myths and supernatural phenomena, or more specifically; “a beautiful phenomenon that appears on cold winter day and nights: sun and moon reflections in the snow that creates a glittering look, which makes the snow-white scenery resemble a fairytale landscape sprinkled with magic dust,” explains designers Wik&Walsøe.
