Last weeks of Perfectionism exhibition

Griffin Gallery’s successful group show PERFECTIoNISM (part III.): The Alchemy of Making is coming into its final weeks before it closes on the 18th November.

The exhibition features nine London-based, talented and award winning artists, who focus on transforming their materials in unusual ways. The artists include Tessa Farmer, who creates miniature evil skeleton fairies that are taking over the insect world. She creates hanging installations with her own taxidermied insects.

piers secunda

Piers Secunda is exhibiting a 7ft sculpture of Chinese mountain, with intricate hanging monasteries made entirely out of floor paint. It is a retreat that is impossible to escape from, which embodies how he felt while he was making it.

Liane Lang is showing a series of photographs and a film called Saints, which is about the lost stories of female saints and the lack of female figures in sculpture. All of her realistic figures are actually dolls that Liane has crafted herself out of silicone.

The show takes place at the Griffin gallery – click here for more information.

Kitchen Aid heaven

We at Despoke often think that the mark of a truly grown up kitchen, someone who seriously has their life together, is the presence of a KitchenAid mixer.  There’s something about their 1950’s fluid design, their chrome bowl and their rather large price tag, that screams- “don’t worry! I know what I am doing! of course I can make my own family recipe Yorkshire puddings whilst being calmly in charge of two under 5 year olds.”  We have no KitchenAid mixer….and feel this says a lot. Ahem.

Well, stand aside those who laugh at our lack of culinary appliances, for the makers of the iconic Artisan Stand Mixer open their first Experience Store in the world to customers in the heart of London’s West End on Wigmore Street and we are on our way down. Stylishly arranged over two floors, the store is the perfect environment to inspire kitchen designers, budding bakers and serious chefs alike. As well as helping you imagine you are living in a World of Interiors spread.

Not only does it display KitchenAid’s famous small domestic appliances including the new Artisan Mini Stand Mixer, but also the recently launched range of major domestic appliances such as the revolutionary Chef Touch Sous Vide system and Chef Sign Deep Induction Trays, which offer a perfectly balanced mix of iconic design and professional performance. We have zero idea of what these products do but we know we want them, for to say you possess a Sous Vide system, is to say you are in charge of your own destiny.

Perhaps most excitingly, the space has a fully functioning demonstration kitchen as well as a cookery school which entertains a rolling schedule of events, offering customers the opportunity to experience the professional results KitchenAid appliances can produce. So, you can try the covetable products in the safe haven of the shop, before buying one and fully growing up.

Cloth & Clay’s Nordic

So, people seem to be throwing this term Hygge around willy nilly at the moment. It’s one of those words that we reckon is a bit of a fancy fad, but we do love the images it conjures up. Hygge (pronounced “hue-gah”) is a Danish word with no literal English translation that roughly encompasses a cosy feeling or atmosphere and the pleasure in making ordinary, every day actions feel special and meaningful.

We Love Lane!

We always keep an eye on Lane as they constantly have brilliant presents and gifts- to ourselves and other people- especially around the festive season. They’ve just launched the Sand Cast Brick Tea Light Holder. A striking triangle, the corners rise inwards to hold a copper tea light cup and are designed to tessellate to create stylish patterns and arrangements. It is handmade by Bulmer Brick and Tile Company in Suffolk using ancient British brick making traditions.

Barbican New Gift Shop

It’s getting to that time of year. It’s too early to properly think about the festive season, but the shops keep displaying tantalising nit bits that would be great under the tree. The Barbican are one step ahead with gifts that not only look good but we wouldn’t mind receiving as well as giving.

Barbican

The Barbican is launching a new 330sqm retail space in the foyers this autumn. With a focus on the Barbican’s programme, its architectural and design legacy, the shop will also shine a spotlight on up and coming design talent.

Designers have been exclusively commissioned to reinterpret the Barbican’s incredible visual conventions into a retail context. This has resulted in brand new capsule collections from brands including Alfred & Wilde, Kate Farley, Lindsay Lang amongst other key designer makers. The result is a collection of impeccably designed objects that subtly convey the gravitas of the building. We are particular fans of these cool mugs by Aandersson. The shapes that would be cast by the shadows would be particularly pleasing.

Hackney based jewellery designer Hannah Davis’s pieces from her brand Wolf and Moon will also be in the new shop.

Arlo and Jacob Autumn ranges

There’s a chill in the air, it’s harder to get up in the morning and Starbucks have launched their Pumpkin flavour coffees. Autumn is most definitely here. When you’ve finished raking leaves and accidentally setting the next door neighbour fence on fire in a vain attempt at a bonfire, head indoors and curl up on one of these bad boys from furniture band Arlo and Jacob.

Rive Roshan at LDF

Rive Roshan were commissioned by the London Design Fair to create an installation of five large hanging screens for the venue’s cafe using Divina fabric by Kvadrat. It’s the first time we have heard of this London-based design studio and we like what we see. Airy spacial partitions of modular panels separated the space playfully as partially open windows between communal tables, adding softness to the industrial backdrop of the Old Truman Brewery.
