These bottle tops were created by Korean industrial designer Junggi Sung as part of a collection named ‘Positive Piece’. The collection aims to encourage viewers to think more deeply about the fundamental elements we take for granted in our daily lives such as air water, wind and earth.

The top of Sung’s ‘Uncomfortale Bottle’ imitates the shape of a conventional water tap and was designed in order to make people think more carefully about how they use tap water. Sung explains; “Recently, drinking water out of PET bottles has become the norm…yet we can still easily drink water out of the tap. This design aims to inspire us to be more cost and energy-efficient and also to take simple actions for our environment. This is a positive piece.”

On the opposite side of the wall just behind the Chilean display, an exhibition showcasing the work of Argentina’s hottest design talent can be found. The work on display is a combination of submissions from eight designers each of whom was hand selected by the Argentine Embassy for their innovative and traditionally inspired work.

Delores Farias of the Argentine Embassy in London told Despoke that for Argentina to be represented at 100% Design was extremely beneficial for the nation’s reputation which is not typically associated with cutting edge design. “When people think of Argentina” Dolores explained, “they think of wine and steak, but the creative industries actually play  a really significant role in the wellbeing of our country’s economy.”

The 100% Argentine Design exhibition displays a quintessential view of Argentina, with each piece representing the show’s manifesto: traditional innovtion. The designers whose work you can see on display include; Arqom, Masekos, Foxy, Adriana Torres, Heidi Jalkh, Buna, Vacavaliente & UAU.

What made you want to become a designer in the first place?
A constant desire to know how things work.

Where did you study design?
I learnt a lot about design in my first job in the manufacturing sector working with design professionals as clients. I went on to formal design study under George Ingham at Canberra School of Art, Australian National University

What was the first thing you designed?
A wooden snapping crocodile toy in design and tech at high school.

How do you define good design?
Good design requires nothing more or less than to delight

What would you be if not a designer?
Architect

Which design of yours are you most proud of and why?A local shop I redesigned. People visit and use it 6 days a week, also I have a good relationship with the client and I continue to work with them from time to time.

Anything in your career you wish you’d done differently?
No, hindsight is pointless.

Jørn Utzon, Hans Wegner, Matali Crasset just to name a few

Which product do you wish you’d designed/do you think is an example of good design?
My dishwasher.

Tell me about your design style at home?
I started renovating our circa 1700s house about 7 years ago. Its a ongoing evolving project, but essentially I have allowed the language of the old to speak alongside the new.

When you leave home, however, you might be stressed and need one spot to get what you want. Resembling cityscapes, they bring to mind another miniature world, looking at life upside down, marking a shift in attention.”

Young Norwegian designer Caroline Olsson will make her UK debut at the 100% Norway exhibition at this year’s 100% Design with her foal-inspired table Bambi.

“My main focus is the functionality of the product I design, which is prominent in all of my pieces,” says designer Caroline who is currently completing her BA in Product Design at Akershus University College outside Oslo. “I enjoy experimenting with a variety of materials, though I am especially fond of using Norwegian materials in my work.”

The Bambi table, which Caroline will show in London, can be used at two different levels; as a coffee table or a small dining table. “The table is inspired by the anatomy of the knee, where the bones can only bend one way,” she says. “The location and angle of the table legs, as well as the meeting points of the joints, help the table to keep an upright and stable position. When the table is folded down and used at the lower level it can give you associations to a small foal who has bent its legs and laid down to rest in the meadow.”

100% Norway curator, Henrietta Thompson, says the Bambi table represents one of the design trends of this year’s Norwegian selection: “Norwegians’ obsession with the natural environment seems to have taken a new twist, with several pieces incorporating biomimicry, and taking their inspiration from the animal kingdom – I’m looking forward to seeing how they go down with the pet-loving public in Britain especially!”
