Kabiri will showcase the new collection by jewellery designer Jayce Wong at their flagship Covent Garden store. The exhibition will take place 26th November – 3rd December.

This opulent fine jewellery collection uses gemstones that have a natural fluorescence, therefore glow under UV light. To showcase Jayce’s pioneering collection Kabiri will display it in a purpose built blackout room within their fine jewellery cellar.

Classically trained as a jeweller and gemologist in London, where she receives her Bachelor and Master Degree in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins. Jayce Wong’s opulent jewellery showcases her passion for coloured gemstones. She takes a sprinkle of glittering, fluorescent diamonds and glowing red-hot rubies, together with a handful of bold, juicy gems, and investigates the range of colours and fluorescing properties under illumination. Through innovative designs and pioneering use of gemstones, Jayce transforms jewellery from daytime charm into night-time glitz though one single medium – light.

The contrast between the perceived artificiality of fluorescence and these natural earthy minerals has been the fascination of many gemologists for centuries. Jayce’s collection explores the potential of using a gem’s unique fluorescence as a source of beauty, rather than indicator of financial value. Her collection challenges established notions of the desirable, creating seductive objects of the future.

The exhibition at Kabiri will also showcase new work by furniture designer Samantha Stephenson.
Stephenson considers the environmental impact of her work, whilst not compromising delivery of high end design furniture. The narrative behind her work is driven by an emphasis on design for disassembly and takes into account the entire life cycle of the object, as well as that of the individual materials used. Elements of the object are never permanently fixed, allowing for ease of storage and transport, as well as for efficient end of life recovery.

In her native Canada, Stephenson has a background in the design of hospitality environments, namely in the creation and execution of custom pieces for bars and restaurants. As a result of her previous experience in construction, Stephenson’s interests lie in experimenting with various materials and forms, resulting in innovative designs which have an emphasis on structural integrity and originality.
The ‘Capsule Collection’ has been exclusively designed for Deadgood by the company‘s directors Ziglam & Brook.

This fully upholstered collection of seating utilises off cuts of fabrics, handpicked to create a graduated run of colour, tones and textures. The forms themselves are derived from a simple three-dimensional capsule shape which creates a comfortable and engaging seating range, with tongue in cheek references to the solar system and 60’s space age adventure.

The products which are suitable for either domestic or contract use, are manufactured in the UK and combine locally sourced waste fabrics with a technically efficient CNC production process, offering great green credentials.

Sizes (in mm)
- Chair: 685(h) x 1050(w) x 900(d)
- 2 Seater Sofa: 685(h) x 1800(w) x 900(d)
- 3 Seater Sofa: 685(h) x 2400(w) x 900(d)

Ziglam & Brook is a creative studio set up by the two Deadgood Directors – Dan Ziglam & Elliot Brook who graduated from Northumbria University’s ‘Three Dimensional Design’ course in July 2003.

The design entrepreneurs soon set about forming Deadgood with a vision to develop an internationally recognised British design brand, respected throughout the industry for approaching things differently, expressing its unique creativity and producing products that people will love.

They continue to develop exciting new products working closely with a network of specialist manufacturers across the UK.

Alongside setting up Deadgood the pair have also pursued an altruistic approach to promoting and supporting the next generation of young designers, setting up an annual regional design exhibition called ‘Launch’, in the North East of England, alongside delivering their self titled ‘Enterprise in Design’ lecture series within Northumbria University’s School of Design.

Exhibition Nov.16th – Dec. 6th
A range of inspired work by Philip Watts Design is to go on display at Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent University to celebrate 15 years of the creative interior design practice.
The exhibition sees the talented designer return to the university where he studied as a furniture and product design student.

The exhibition will feature product and interior design reflecting the history of the company, which began after graduation from a converted shed in Philip’s back garden and went on to become one of the UK’s leading creative design firms. The business, named FX Interior Design Practice of the Year in 2007, now boasts a ten-strong design team, with a design studio, workshop and showroom.

One eye catching features will be an iconic‘melting’ spiralstaircase, sculpted in cast aluminium. The piece will be a work in progress so visitors will be able to see different components are used. Other pieces including
an exciting chandelier, statement handles and a wall installation of ‘Gloo’ urinals, sinks and early retail products such as the ‘Moo’ salt and pepper pot cows, ‘Mr Looney’ lamp and Wee Willy Winky candlesticks will also feature.

This is the first time this range of work has been seen together as a complete history of creative output, and the exhibition will aim to give visitors the chance to see the thoughts and processes which have been integral
to the company’s success.

Philip says “Interested in design – be it product, commercial, interior or retro, then this is the exhibition for you.”

The Church project consists of a chapel installation created by JMF Casey and commissioned by 20 Hoxton Square Projects. Throughout the duration of the exhibition there will be a series of performances, involving sermons and music in collaboration with writer and academic Emile Bojesen.

The Church uses the aesthetics of religion and ritual to deal with contemporary philosophical issues and ideas of faith. Conceived as a home for a modern mystical sect operating outside the limitations of mainstream “rational” atheism, The Church explores the potential of cross-discipline art practices, conveying a more engaging and poetical approach to existential problems.

JMF Casey Makes The pews from wood, then paints them and finally scraps the paint away to draw his images.

JMF Casey’s practice was born from a natural propensity toward images of a morbid, violent or melancholic nature, a tendency that he seeks to understand and enrich through extended research. These investigations have led him towards increasingly ominous and esoteric subject matters, illustrated with imagery drawn from an array of sources, including gothic art, war photography, horror films and pornography. Primarily executed in monochrome scratch painting, his work alludes to poetic, historic or philosophic concepts. Akin to Baudelaire’s proclaimed task of extracting “Beauty from Evil”, his practice is concerned with the amoral redemptive quality

Charlie Whinney Associates is delighted to announce the unveiling of the artist’s latest work of interior design: a modern champagne trolley commissioned by Laurent-Perrier for the The Grill at The Dorchester, on Park Lane in London. Laurent-Perrier were searching for a cutting-edge design that combined visual impact with beauty and sophistication. Charlie Whinney – whose former company, sixixis, won the 2006 Laurent-Perrier Design Talent Award – was chosen with a series of elegant and daring design concepts.

Laurent-Perrier and The Dorchester chose an organic design reminiscent of swaying branches that complemented Charlie’s trademark fluid lines, and was built from Oak on an original Wenge base from the restaurant. This design was only possible due to an innovative new process that mixes cutting-edge steam-bending techniques with the traditional inlay.

The Dorchester is delighted with the champagne trolley, which has been well received by customers and staff alike. Renaud Gregoire, Director of Food and Beverage, commented: “The champagne trolley’s stylish design fits well with the character of the restaurant. Design is one of the key contributing factors to the overall ambience of a restaurant alongside excellent food and service, so getting the right look was extremely important.”

About Charlie Whinney Associates

Charlie Whinney is the leading exponent of the art of steam-bending wood to create beautiful, unusual curved furniture and sculptures. His work and projects are among the most challenging and ambitious in the UK currently, each taking the art (and science)-form further along an unbeaten track of innovation. His most recent projects include the Harvey Nichols window display August 2009, a 30m Oak sculpture of DNA for Cambridge University in 2008, a collaboration with Metropolitan Workshop for the London Architecture Festival – a piece entitled ‘Road Trip to the Moon’, also in 2008, and the Chelsea Flower show with Andy Sturgeon in 2007. Future architectural projects include a steel sculpture for a major new restaurant in Texas, a wooden sculpture for a new hotel at Brooklands, and an innovative small wooden living space on a major sculptural site in Cumbria.
Since the early days of mankind, human beings have been amazed by fire and mesmerised by the dancing flame, the warmth, fascination and comfort that it brings.

The evolution of the hole in the wall fireplace has been slow. However, over the last 25 years, with its partners in Holland, Modus Design has been innovating UK fireplace design, transforming the traditional concept of the ‘fireplace’ and creating inspirational and contemporary functional objects of beauty that incorporate leading technology, glass, stone and moulded metal. Aiming to create bold, visual impact and on making design statement, Modus Design has developed a truly unique collection that pushes the fireplace into a new design space. The collection includes dramatic suspended fireplaces, transparent two-sided glass-to-ceiling fireplaces, corner features, sculptured on-the-wall fireplaces and outdoor table fires.

British designer and ceramicist Peter Ting has designed Hachi a dinner service for Royal Crown Derby that beautifully re-contextualises iconic patterns from the company’s rich history.

“Out of my huge admiration for all that Royal Crown Derby and all the other British potteries have accomplished in fine bone china, I wanted to explore and celebrate these patterns that have become part of our aesthetic landscape’ says Ting. ‘I am interested in investigating new ways of incorporating these ‘traditional’ patterns into contemporary life.’

Ting has accomplished this in Hachi by choosing portions of Royal Crown Derby’s existing patterns, and boldly encircling them with a dark band forming a modern figure eight (Hachi means eight in Japanese). Tiny golden florals are sprinkled sporadically on the surface, and gold gilding is used to line the edges of all the shapes, a signature style of Royal Crown Derby.

Ting employs elements of the following Royal Crown Derby patterns in Hachi: Aves (originally a copperplate engraving), Imari (a highly collected, Japanese-inspired pattern originated over 200 years ago) and the recently launched Indian Summer and Cherry Blossom patterns. When Hachi is mixed and matched with pieces from Royal Crown Derby’s original dinner services, the results are spectacular.

Ting is currently consultant designer to Asprey, and was previously in-house designer at Thomas Goode & Co . He has been creating ceramics for thirty years and his work is in major royal, private and public collections worldwide including the V&A. Hachi is available at Thomas Goode & Co.
