Gavin Coyle Book Caddy

Look, maybe it’s just because we live in Walthamstow and see with our own eyes the creativity that abides there, but we think it might just be the most creative area of East London. Maybe. (Ahem.) With the Blackhorse Workshops, the E17 Art Trail and just about every design and art magazine editor living there, we reckon we win in the design influencer stakes.

Have you been to Tate Edit?

One of our most favourite things here at Despoke are shops….in museums. Opened in November 2016, Tate Edit is the new retail space in Tate Modern’s Boiler House, giving visitors the chance to browse an ever-changing selection of products, limited editions, and favourite objects chosen by Tate staff and a rolling programme of invited ‘editors’.

Barbican New Gift Shop

It’s getting to that time of year. It’s too early to properly think about the festive season, but the shops keep displaying tantalising nit bits that would be great under the tree. The Barbican are one step ahead with gifts that not only look good but we wouldn’t mind receiving as well as giving.

Barbican

The Barbican is launching a new 330sqm retail space in the foyers this autumn. With a focus on the Barbican’s programme, its architectural and design legacy, the shop will also shine a spotlight on up and coming design talent.

Designers have been exclusively commissioned to reinterpret the Barbican’s incredible visual conventions into a retail context. This has resulted in brand new capsule collections from brands including Alfred & Wilde, Kate Farley, Lindsay Lang amongst other key designer makers. The result is a collection of impeccably designed objects that subtly convey the gravitas of the building. We are particular fans of these cool mugs by Aandersson. The shapes that would be cast by the shadows would be particularly pleasing.

Hackney based jewellery designer Hannah Davis’s pieces from her brand Wolf and Moon will also be in the new shop.

Design Market

We know we love vintage design- we just wish we could afford it. Now although we might need to save some pennies, we have a website that’s dedicated to sourcing it all so we can drool over it whilst saving.

Heal’s Modern Craft Club

Now in its third year, Heal’s Modern Craft Market returns bigger and better than ever to the Tottenham Court Road store with an extended run from 7 March to 23 April 2016. Celebrating the best in contemporary crafts, the event provides a platform for the artisans of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, an extension of the Great Heal’s Bodging Race, plus live workshops, demos and talks showcasing materials from leather to stone. Here are a few of the crafters involved.

We were transfixed by Yuta Segawa’s pieces at LDF where he presented his tiny pots in a spectrum of colours- we even bought a few! He was born in Japan and now makes in Lewisham, London. His miniature pots retail for £15 or £20. Each piece is unique and handmade in London.

Carmel Wilkinson-Ayre is a multidiscipline designer, maker and ceramicist based in Edinburgh. Having recently graduated from Robert Gordon University, she was spotted at the New Designers fair in June 2015 in which she exhibited a range of playful, colourful ceramics and fabrics for the home._Andrew_Ludick_Jug_Beakers

Andrew Ludick’s work has slowly evolved towards forms that illustrate the natural properties of clay and the processes he uses to create them. The building of these forms involves coiling and pinching the clay to create vases, bowls and various other shapes.  After the form is built it is decorated with complementary shapes and patterns, before being covered in a clear transparent glaze that serves to deepen the colours and to seal the clay for functionality.

Christmas picks from Skandium

We passed the Skandium store in Marylebone a few weekends ago and had to be physically held back from entering and spending our last months wages. That’s the hold Skandium has over Despoke. Here we have gathered a few Christmas ideas…..for anyone who is reading and needs them. Send the link to your entire family as a massive hint. We have.

AALTO VASE
BY IITTALA

Iittala products would look perfect dotted around our entire house. Annoyingly at £125 a vase for this Aalto vase, we can’t quite justify the spend. Do Skandium do a January sale?

FLIP MIRROR
BY NORMANN COPENHAGEN

Ahhhhh Norman Copenhagen. How we love thee and aspire to design our lives around your simple yet perfect goods. This flip mirror retails at £75 which is totally acceptable for a piece that will frame our ugly mugs like a painting!

KOPPA MAGAZINE RACK BY VERSO DESIGN

KOPPA MAGAZINE RACK
BY VERSO DESIGN

Writing about design means we have to collect every magazine about interiors and beautiful things we can get our hands on. And we have to keep them all. Really we do. This Koppa magazine rack by Verso would hold them all very nicely, thank you very much!

FJORD SCENTED CANDLE
BY SKANDINAVISK

One of the easiest ways to calm down at home and to deliver yourself somewhere else, is to light a candle. This being Skandium, their candles smell of Norweigan Fjords. Of course. We can’t quite imagine what that smells like, but are up for having a go!

Retail: Selfridges’ world-famous windows arrive in Birmingham

SELFRIDGES WINDOWS pic2

Its disc-embellished exterior has been a city icon for 11 years, but now Selfridges is giving city shoppers another reason to stare, as its world-famous window displays arrive in Birmingham.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to Selfridges’ Oxford Street store to see the highly imaginative schemes that have entertained and enticed shoppers for decades, making them a tourist destination in their own right.

Originally installed in 1909 to encourage customers to visit, the windows have become an integral part of Selfridges’ identity, providing a platform to showcase the most exciting exclusive product, themes and events taking place in-store.

Now, as part of a £20 million redevelopment programme which will see the store boast a revamped Beauty Hall and launch a new, dedicated Menswear space, Selfridges Birmingham will follow in the footsteps of the founding store. Continue Reading…

Tom and Ruth Chapman, joint CEOs of MATCHESFASHION.COM, determined after 27 years in Wimbledon Village  the location of their first boutique to merge their further 3 small stores located in the area into one luxury shopping environment combining the digital and physical platforms of the business. With the appointment of MRA Architecture & Interior Design practice they set about designing a modern interior concept for the 320m² flagship store based on the brands ‘edit’ and modernist inspiration offered by Tom – who personally sourced specific mid-century furniture and suggested artists such as Donald Judd for reference to meet his aesthetic needs.  Continue Reading…
