‘SHOP’ at Her House Gallery in Hoxton is an exhibition by Vicky Thornton and Morag Myerscough comprising two parts: a collection of hand made ceramics and seat cushions by architect Thornton and artist/designer Myerscough’s personal chair collection. The exhibition will also see the launch of a new product in Myerscough’s Her House collection.

Architect, writer and illustrator, Vicky Thornton’s latest project is a collection of seat pads. Thornton has upcycled her growing collection of 50s and 60s vintage textiles and also used them as inspiration for a collection of her own print designs, re-interpreting images from contemporary life like the i-pod and takeaway coffee cup and printing them in bright, bold colour designs.

Sitting alongside the seat pads are Thornton’s hand-thrown stoneware ceramics, made using recycled ‘waste’ clay from the throwing and turning process. Her ceramics, ranging from jugs and cups to bowls and vases, all share a pure and modernist aesthetic: simple forms and bold colours, often used in complementary pairs of groups, recalling the colours commonly used by the likes of Le Corbusier in the early to mid 20th century.

At the heart of SHOP will be Myerscough’s personal chair collection. Unashamedly describing it as a ‘bit of an obsession’ the collection of vintage chairs has grown considerably over the last few years and will act as a backdrop for Thornton’s designs. The show will also feature a bench with lacquered legs and a reclaimed wood top, designed by Myerscough and the artist Luke Morgan – a new product under the Her House Gallery label.

Hiroshi Kawano was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1971. He studied interior architecture at Tama Art University, Tokyo. Since 2007, he has been working with international companies, including ligne roset (France) and ex.t (Italy). Drawing by hand in full 1:1 scale before forming a model in wood, Aarnio then studied the shape from every angle and test sat to ensure it’s balanced and ergonomically correct. The new design features soft corners and only comes in two colors—white because “it always looks good in fiberglass” and light blue because that is one of the colours typically occurring in Savon de Marseille. Designed by Duffy London, the Shadow Chair was first launched at the Milan Salone Satellite in April 2009 with Hidden Art. At first glance it is a simple wooden chair that seems to defy gravity by standing upright while only having two front legs, but on closer inspection the shadow is made from steel and is attached to a metal frame built inside the chair. The Shadow Chair is available in a number of finishes and the wood is from Forest Stewardship Council managed forests and other controlled sources.

Trick is a bookcase designed by Sakura Adachi for Campeggi that turns into a table with two chairs. When both sides of the bookcase are moved from the original position, they function as chairs; what remains in the middle works as a table.
