CDW Presents revealed

Finally, one of the best parts of Clerkenwell Design Week (the Presents stream) has been revealed and we are extremely excited. here are some of our top picks.

Beacon

This year’s show is set to present one of the festival’s highest installations: The Beacon – a 7.5m tall structure, located at the entrance to Design Fields. Inspired by the Tower of Babel, the structure will feature an internal staircase encased in a typographical design which celebrates internationalism. Visitors will be able to climb up the internal staircase to a viewing platform over-looking a cross-section where the industrial meets historical Clerkenwell. Continue Reading…

Awesomestow designers at Heals

It may be partly do do with the fact that we live in Walthamstow and love how creative and craft-led the area is, but we were particularly proud and impressed to hear that The Blackhorse Workshop has been selected to be part of this year’s Heal’s Modern Craft Market at the Tottenham Court Road store.

Barbican New Gift Shop

It’s getting to that time of year. It’s too early to properly think about the festive season, but the shops keep displaying tantalising nit bits that would be great under the tree. The Barbican are one step ahead with gifts that not only look good but we wouldn’t mind receiving as well as giving.

Barbican

The Barbican is launching a new 330sqm retail space in the foyers this autumn. With a focus on the Barbican’s programme, its architectural and design legacy, the shop will also shine a spotlight on up and coming design talent.

Designers have been exclusively commissioned to reinterpret the Barbican’s incredible visual conventions into a retail context. This has resulted in brand new capsule collections from brands including Alfred & Wilde, Kate Farley, Lindsay Lang amongst other key designer makers. The result is a collection of impeccably designed objects that subtly convey the gravitas of the building. We are particular fans of these cool mugs by Aandersson. The shapes that would be cast by the shadows would be particularly pleasing.

Hackney based jewellery designer Hannah Davis’s pieces from her brand Wolf and Moon will also be in the new shop.

Watch: Desinere

We highly recommend the young talented British trained brand Desinere founded in 2010, and based in Singapore. Honesty is the best policy for founder Melvin Ong as he leads experimentation with materials on a range of products. Each design is conceived through the quiet reflection of relationships between items, people and experience enabling the creation of authentic, pure objects that are refreshingly unpredictable. Ladies Do Good in Emerging Brands

We caught up with the leading young ladies in Emerging Brands of 100% Interiors about design as a business and are there as many women emerging on to the scene as there should be?

Textile designer and wallpaper maverick Kirath Ghundoo admitted that even at university young textile designers, mostly women, had very limited skills in business when graduating. Luckily for her, her empire was inspired by her fathers drive and business prowess. As a result she’s not only a hugely popular designer (Elle Decoration, Vogue, The Observer love her designs) but is setting up an enterprise to help young textile designers develop their all important business skills.
