Jasper Morrison, James Irvine and Matthew Hilton all started at life at Kingston University. The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture has collaborated with KingstonFirst who manage the town centre and together they have opened a ‘retail lab’ called ‘The Work Shop’ in the Market House which sells artwork and products from staff, students and graduates. Most of the products are made in the University workshop.

It offers the students a context for their work and practical experience of dealing with customers, pricing, sourcing and marketing. The graduates are benefiting from a place to test new work with the
general public. Kingston Marketplace has recently been voted as the second best shopping area in the UK by Google Street View.

The work is diverse and includes paintings, prints, furniture, books, home wares and more, all original and hand-made. The top selling products are CLEA a spatula /drainer by 1st year student Clea Jentsch and the HORNY coat hook made by NUU from £54. The shop is managed by MA Creative Economy students Alex Farnea and Yashar Sadhegi.

Peter Christian (Business Development Manager Kingston University) said ‘The experiment is attracting larger producers and distributors and it is hoped that some of the participants will develop into the celebrated Kingston alumni of the future’
