The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is starting 2010 with a new vision and brand identity. With its recently recognised status as the UK’s foremost professional body for interior designers, the British Institute of Interior Design sets out a new chapter in its history.
Originally established 45 years ago, it is the only professional organisation for interior designers which has been granted Institute status by the Secretary of State as the pre-eminent body in the field.
The Institute’s new President, Jenny Gibbs, will be leading the way through emphasis on encouraging and supporting creativity and competence in the field of interior design through education, practical professional support, development opportunities and facilitating best practice.
They also have plans to develop interior design membership globally: firstly with a trade mission to Chicago and a five-year plan to attract far eastern members. According to Jenny Gibbs “Our commitment to members is paramount and whilst our aims are to continue to grow and develop in new territories internationally, our core members, associates and affiliates will all benefit from the impact of a global organisation.”
The new branding and logotype has been created by Peter & Paul. Sheffield based, Peter & Paul is an agency with an outstanding reputation for developing considered and original design. It has spent six months working alongside the British Institute of Interior Design to produce a brand that demonstrates both power and authority.
The main priority will be an expansion and re-organisation of the Continued Professional Development programme for its new and existing members. Institute status will only increase the organisation’s commitment to seeking out and developing design talent. Under the new title, attendance of CPDs will become compulsory for members, inspiring and urging designers to expand creatively and academically. Events for CPDs will be available in London and throughout the UK through a series of regional Road Shows.
The British Institute of Interior Design will introduce their first Awards show to be held in 2011. The re-branded website will be launched in April and new features will be implemented on an ongoing basis in the year, to prepare for full expansion into the new, dynamic brand.

Good progress for our industry and BIID is doing great things … not sure I like the branding though
Fantastic and well deserved news about Institute status. An expansion of CPD programming will help nurture and develop new interior design talent and only go to improve the professionalism of the industry.
Fantastic new logo – I just love how it reflects the concept of the “interior”! It is very sleek and sophisticated and very refreshing. Great achievement for the industry; can’t wait to see what they do next.
I agree with Andrew’s comments on both the progress and the branding.
